Professional Papers on Indian Engineering

The Professional Papers on Indian Engineering Reading Room houses four encyclopedic volumes detailing 19th Century architecture, engineering, and infrastructure projects from the subcontinent.

Edited by Julius George Medley, principal of the Thomason College, Roorkee (present-day IIT Roorkee), the four quartos contain 167 articles, 204 lithographs, 10 engravings, 4 photozincographs, and 3 photographs.

A brief sampling of projects featured includes: Lahore Railway Station – Abbottabad Church at Punjab – Report of a Special Committee to consider the question of the improvement of Agra Fort – The Ceylon Railway – Stone Trusses in Central India – Water Supply of Fort William – The Great Trigonometrical Survey of India – The Allahabad Jail.

A complete twenty-two volume set of the Professional Papers on Indian Engineering is located at the Mahatma Gandhi Central Library at IIT Roorkee, as part of the Thomason College Publications Archives.

Urbs Indis is an urban aerial photography studio and archival library founded by Mumbai based architect and artist Robert D Stephens (RMA Architects). Since 2007 he has been documenting urban India from 10,000 feet above sea level, in black and white as well as colour photography.
